A regatta is an organised series of boat races. … The Italian word regatta means “contention for mastery” and comes from the Latin word regatta, or “to compete, haggle, sell at retail.” Regatta came to specifically mean “boat race” — and the many social events related to it — in the late 1700s.
Although regattas are typically amateur competitions, they are usually very highly organised, formally structured events, with complex rules precisely describing the schedule and procedures of the event.
